Grove Art Festival: What to see
02/15/2008 02:01
Put aside galleries and museums -- at least for the time being. The Coconut Grove Arts festival begins Saturday, and while it's called an arts festival, the thousands of people expected at Myers and Peacock parks throughout the weekend will be in for a lot more than strictly paintings. Link
The Spiderwick Chronicles (PG) *** | Fantasy full of magical charm
02/15/2008 02:01
At a time when too many children's fantasy films are weighed down by their bloated self-importance and bombast, The Spiderwick Chronicles is a refreshingly spry, modest adventure: It's pocket-size where The Golden Compass and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe felt like encyclopedias. Link
Step Up 2 The Streets (PG-13) ** | That same old song and dance -- again
02/15/2008 02:01
This sequel to 2006's Step Up opens with a startling piece of guerrilla theater on a subway train. It ends with a rain-soaked dance number that looks like an outtake from Night of the Living Dead: The Musical. Sandwiched between these two unusual sequences are a whole lot of familiar ingredients. Link
In Bruges (R) *** | Crime story's a bloody hit
02/15/2008 02:01
In Bruges is what Guy Ritchie might dream about making if, in fact, he could make a worthwhile movie anymore. Dusted lightly with a Tarantino sensibility and sly British humor and steeped in a cheerfully warped morality, the entertainingly profane film follows the adventures of hitmen Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) who are hiding out in the pretty Belgian city after a job gone wrong. Link
Definitely, Maybe (PG-13) **½ | Definitely a refreshing effort
02/15/2008 02:01
Maybe it's a measure of the numbing awfulness of romantic comedies in general lately, but Definitely, Maybe isn't nearly so bad as you might fear; it's actually fairly pleasant, a bit too off-color to be a family film but enjoyable just the same. That statement sounds like faint praise, but this time of year is a graveyard for film releases, and, besides, anyone who survived the double whammy horror of Over Her Dead Body and The Hottie and the Nottie will find the film's lack of Eva Longoria Parker... Link
The Year My Parents Went on Vacation (Unrated) **½ | Warm story of a boy forced into uncertain life
02/15/2008 02:01
This review previously was published in January during the Miami Jewish Film Festival. The year is 1970 and Brazilians are getting ready for the World Cup, being played in June in Mexico. Discussions about the team take place more often, or at least more vocally, than talk about politics, especially for a country under a military dictatorship. Any kind of dissidence is sure cause for arrest, and death is not uncommon among those taken by force by the police. Link
Jumper (PG-13) * | They're off to a good start, but then everything falls flat
02/15/2008 02:01
The best stuff in Jumper comes early, while the movie is still busy explaining its scenario. It's only when all the pieces are in place and the story actually kicks in that things start to fall apart, and quickly. Link
Diary of the Dead (R) ** | Not horrible, and that's not good
02/15/2008 02:01
In Diary of the Dead, George A. Romero reboots his long-running zombie saga for the YouTube generation. Romero pretends the previous four Dead films never happened, taking us to the exact moment the dead starting rising from their graves to eat the living, only this time Internet surfers are posting all the mayhem online. Link
Jay-Z, Mary J. headed our way
02/15/2008 02:01
Jay-Z's teaming up with a diva for a tour -- and it's not his main squeeze Beyoncé. The artist formerly known as Shawn Carter hits the road with Mary J. Blige for their Heart of the City tour, which kicks off March 22 at Miami's AmericanAirlines Arena. Link
Meet Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco
02/15/2008 02:01
The Queen of Disco is still going strong at age 59. Donna Summer, whose groundbreaking disco anthems have provided the soundtrack for countless gyrating hedonists on the dance floor, heads for the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise this weekend for two shows. Link
Second solo comes with tasty treats
02/15/2008 02:01
MIKE DOUGHTY Golden Delicious ATO Records Mike Doughty has never been a technically gifted singer, but his edgy scatting fit perfectly with his former band Soul Coughing's cool, offbeat jazz-rock. His solo work mines similar territory, transfixing the listener with sleek, smart beats and vocal charisma. Link
Take a lesson from Bachelorette No. 2
02/15/2008 02:01
I was sitting at what was possibly the worst fashion show in the history of Miami at the Hotel Victor on South Beach. No runway. No lights. Just six women with the same '80s shopping mall hairstyle dodging through the overflow crowd on the rooftop lounge. (I heard it was a Michael Capponi event, the real estate mogul who hosts legendary soirees, but Michael, say this wasn't so.) Link
Clubland was never more appetizing
02/15/2008 02:01
While the Super Bowl and Super Tuesday are history, it's only the beginning of Stupor February in South Florida, thanks to the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, which kicks off on Thursday with a slew of perky Food Network stars, fancy feasts and wine, lots of wine. And whether you'll be in a drunken daze, a food coma or a combination of both, you won't be alone. And it's not just the festival to thank -- or blame, depending on your perspective. The Forge is hosting a festival prelude on Wednesday... Link
The frugal gambler bets on the Hard Rock
02/15/2008 02:01
I recently moved into a new apartment. To compensate for the increase in rent, my New Year's resolutions were to stay away from restaurants and curtail my junkie-like spending habits on iTunes. Link
Go, baby, go and get this riveting suspense
02/15/2008 02:01
Ben Affleck's directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, adds to the star's bulging resumé (actor, writer, activist). The bleak film, based on the novel from Mystic River writer Dennis Lehane, also makes a case that nepotism, sometimes, can be OK. Link
Miami is the city of passion and lights.
See the sun, the beach, the palms as you walk across ocean drive.
Miami beach deco style will make you smile.
